BIA, She is the Force
Heart disease is the number one killer of women in United States. As health care gaps exist in clinical medicine, as physicians, our barriers include delayed risk stratification of traditional risk factors, inadequate diagnosis of non-traditional risk factors which lead to delay in much required clinical care; but also, social determinants which limit accessibility and translate into poor outcomes.
This is the first book in a biennial series. It is a compilation of chapters to address the most pressing issues in clinical care of our female patients; put together by our clinical colleagues. I hope these publications serve as an evidence-based reference text for our physicians in training and physician colleagues.
There are two sections to the book. In the first section, we have compiled chapters on issues that disproportionately affect women. These include Ischemia with non- obstructive coronary arteries, microvascular dysfunction, cardio-obstetrics, COVID infection, peripheral arterial disease, gastrointestinal issues, hypertension and thromboembolism with focus on the state of art management strategies. Section two is a compilation of clinical case reports on our female patients. I must congratulate our authors for their hard work and contributions. I must also extend my gratitude to each one of our physician colleagues for tirelessly serving our patients every day. The title originates from the Greek goddess of force BIA. It is intended to remind us of the impact we can have on our community by providing state of the art care to every BIA: every female who is the personified definition of strength and force.
Our immediate goal is to start a series of reference texts for our physician community as we continue to serve our female patient population. With aggressive screening and preventative strategies, we seek to achieve our intermediate goal of improved health outcomes, translating into lower morbidity and health care costs. Our long term goal is to make health a necessity for our under-served female community, not a luxury.
With love, for all the BIAs in the community.
All proceeds from the book will be donated to Ascension Women Heart Program.
